When each one is useful
Neither one has to win. They solve overlapping jobs in different ways.
Use Apple’s Duplicates album when you already live in Photos and want Apple’s grouping — including lookalikes — plus Merge. That is a Photos-native workflow.
Use Cleanuply when you want a bit-perfect pass across photos and videos, a review cluster with a suggested keeper, and the rest of the cleanup categories (large videos, screenshots, bursts) in the same app. Exact Duplicates will not flag a near-identical second shot as a duplicate; that is intentional. Similar shots are a separate category.
On older libraries, exact copies often show up from iCloud re-downloads, AirDrop, and Messages saves. How much storage that represents varies a lot by library — treat any gigabyte range you see elsewhere on this site as typical or illustrative, not a guarantee.
